Lady Liberty Signature – Part 1 of 3

Sunday Aug 31, 2008

Outcome:

Step 1

First off, make your new document (File -> New) and then fill your canvas with an off white color. Try to use the same color as the background of your original stock picture.

Step 1

Now, start off by adding a c4d render (click here for mine). You may want to scatter smudge it a bit to fill up a little bit more of the canvas.

Step 1

Now duplicate the render you used in your last layer. This time, leave the blending mode on normal instead of changing it to lighten. This is why using an LP render would be wise / advised. Duplicate it once more to make it more visible.

Step 1

Now for this step the same c4d was added, but instead to the other side and rotated. If your render does not look good like this, try using a separate render or switching up your render for both sides for a new one. Now get out a large (50-55px) hard round brush, and smudge your c4d render until you get a cloud sort of effect. Although this may be hard to achieve, this is needed and you should get the hang of it after a little bit of practice. Here are what the 2 layers look like:

Step 5

Leave both of these layers on normal at 100% opacity. Your signature should look something like this right now:

Step 5

Now, add your render to the signature (click here for mine). This render is red, to match with the red in the c4d renders.

Step 5

Now you have to make the render blend in with the background a little bit more. To do this, you do not have to erase, but
you do have to grab some key colors from your render. In this case what was done was to use the eye dropper tool and
then brush with it with a soft or hard round brush, and then smudge it with about the same brush and brush settings that
you used earlier. Another way that you could do this would be simply to duplicate the render and smudge the render itself.
This is the first two layers of smudging, which are set to normal at 100% opacity:

This is the first two layers of smudging, which are set to normal at 100% opacity:

This is the third layer, which is set to Linear Burn at 100% opacity:

This is the forth layer. It is set to soft light and on 100% opacity:

This is the fifth and final layer of smudging which is set to lighten at 100% opacity.

Step 5

The c4d that was used earlier in the sig was duplicated twice brought to the top of the signature. Leave these layers
on normal at 100% opacity.

Step 5

Now the render was again duplicated and smudged with a hard round brush (~27px). This layer is duplicated and
set to Soft Light at 100% opacity.

Step 5

Now a small section of an outside stock was pasted into the signature. The following filters were applied to it:
Filter -> Distort -> Ocean Ripple. (Mess around with the settings until you find something suitable.)
Filter -> Artistic -> Plastic wrap (Same as above. Any settings should work fine.)
