How to contain a layer in photoshop?

Wednesday Jul 28, 2010

I want to determine a certain area (like a circle) and when I add a layer or image to Photoshop, the image/layer doesn’t take up the whole canvas. It just takes up that circle area and the rest is transparent. I’m guessing a mask would do this. But how do I do this?

You’ll want to use the mask feature, yes. But the easiest way to achieve what you want to do is Photoshop’s "Paste Into" command.

Let’s say that you want a photograph to appear inside of a circle – but not inside anything else in your artwork.

1) Start by creating a new layer and draw a circle on it using the ellipse tool.

2) Select the area of the circle by holding the control key down on your keyboard and clicking the Circle in the layer’s pallete. This will cause the area of the circle to be selected. (Note – if you control+click the layer, nothing will happen. You have to control+click the circle on the layer in order to get Photoshop to select the area of the circle).

3) Open up the photograph or artwork that you want to place into the circle. Select the entire object (Control +A) and copy it then go back to your circle and click Control+Shift+V

This will paste the artwork into a mask that is precisely the size of your circle. This same technique works with any selection using the "Paste into" technique.

How do I mess with lighting in just one layer without effecting rest in photoshop?

Thursday Jul 8, 2010

Honestly, this is killing me. I’m trying to adjust the lighting in one single layer on photoshop, but it ends up effecting all the layers below it like the base layer which I don’t want to change. I lock it and the lighting adjustments still effect it, but I just want to edit ONE layer above the base. How do I do that?

I assume you are using the "dodge" and "burn" tools. It doesn’t really matter any lighting adjustments can be played.

Always make a copy of your original layers when doing photo manipulation. Lock "All" on your original layer and do all your lighting on the new layer. This way too you can adjust the transparency of the shadows or highlights.

(If you are talking about levels you should post a new question because that is a whole different world, but I would be glad to help you out though)

How do I get the layer tab back in photoshop?

Friday Jun 18, 2010

Ok, I was trying to view the layers in photoshop cs4 on my mac laptop, but I accidentally pressed the close button and now my layer tab is gone. (Just got a mac and not used to it yet, that’s why I accidentally closed the tab.) It’s the layer tab that’s on the right of the screen and shows the different layers. Can someone please tell me how to get it back?

Go to Window>Layers and open the layers palette.
Dock the Layers palette (get the tab back) by dragging the Layers palette to the palette panel.

How do you make something appear on only one layer in Photoshop?

Sunday May 30, 2010

Sorry about the badly worded title.

Anyway, say you have a sticker or a circle on a layer on top of a background in Photoshop. How can I draw something no with the brush, but only make it appear on the circle and not the background? If you get what I mean.
Thanks in advance.

Select the layer that the circle is on. In your Layers panel, you will see four buttons at the top where it says ‘Lock.’ The first is ‘Lock Transparent Pixels’. Select this and you will see a little lock appear on your circle layer. Use the brush tool, and voila! The brush appears only on the circle.

If you want to unlock it so that you can brush outside the circle, just click that button again.

How do you put one text layer thats on top underneath another text layer in Photoshop?

Tuesday May 11, 2010

Well I have two text layers in PhotoShop, and the newest layer needs to go underneath the other text layer, but its on top now. How do I change that and make the newest layer underneath the oldest layer?

If you don’t have the Layers window open, go to Window>Layers

Then in the layers window, just drag and drop the text layer underneath the other.
