A layer mask comes with each new layer when i;ve not opted for a layer mask

I've been using PS2 for a while and I've never encountered that. It may always be something that a later version may have a checkbox in the preferences or in the layer properties. If the program was not doing it before and now suddenly does, you may want to reinstall photoshop. I had to do that because my CS2 was doing some strange things as well. I found that using the explore option for the CD drive and using the non-autorun setup file worked.

This tutorial demonstrates how to make a true Photoshop mask using the selection brush. For those that like masking versus the marching ants, this tutorial provides an alternative for selecting your objects. Skill level 4 out of 10.

i've been looking for it for hours, i even downloaded a file that claimed to add it into elements 7 but with no luck, it's frustrating.

Here's a tutorial on making a layer mask in Elements. To create the Levels adjustment layer, click on the half moon icon at the top of the Layers Palette, scroll down and click on Levels.

The Alibony tutorials are for Elements 6 and 7. You can do all of them with Elements 7. They are very good practice.

There's a good layer mask that you can add to any layer (better than the Elements mask), a transform selection tool (worth it's weight in gold) and a channel mixer that you might find some use for later. And the tools self-install. To use them click on the Effects Palette. If the Effects Palette isn't open, Window>Effects. At the top left of this Palette there are 4 icons. The third from the left should be Photo Effects - click it. Then click on the dropdown arrow on the right side of the box that's on the right side of the top of the Palette. Scroll down and click on Hidden Power to access the actions.

To use a layer mask paint with black to remove (black hides) and white to re-do (white shows).

This video shows how to collage 2 photos with a round soft brush in photoshop.

masking basically hides what you are not working on, som you can edit visual part of layer or image
..
