Watch the HD version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XPj0XdbkuA&fmt=18
In this video I demonstrate the new features in Adobe Photoshop CS4 extended. Today I will be looking at the new 3D capabilities not found in the previous Creative Suite (CS3 Extended).
Features demonstrated:
O Converting 2D images to 3D shapes
- The new “3D” menu
- Conversion to 3D
O Working with 3D shapes
- Moving the 3D object
- Rotating the 3D object
- Scaling the 3D object
O Painting on 3D objects
- Using regular Photoshop tools eg. brush, dodge, smudge on 3D shapes
- Paint remains when rotating
O Editing a flat texture
- Painting on the flat texture of the object
- Exporting it onto the object
O 3D Advanced Workspace
- Lighting tools
- Materials
- Textures
- Other 3D tools
My thoughts on the 3D capabilities
I am very impressed with the 3D tools and how fast they are. I think it is amazing that I can use all the tools for 2D images on the 3D shape. I think editing the flat texture could do with a live preview as you are making changes whilst blind.
There is a good selection of shapes eg. sphere, cube. But one thing that disappoints me is there is no ability to create a custom shape with lines. They should have added that feature instead of making the pointless “hat” shape.
My thoughts on the program as a whole
The regular tools run incredibly fast when editing 2D images and run a lot faster than expected on 3D shapes. There are a few minor additions which will speed up productivity which is very good.
However, I feel very angry at Adobe as they say they have lots of new features powered by your graphics card. If you don’t have a good system then these are useless to you.
What Adobe have just added is something to make the faster computers faster. Not all tools work if you have a bad graphics card (that means me and my 72mb Unicorn :P).
I will demonstrate canvas rotation, panning, zooming and other OpenGL features when I get a new computer in December.

This video gives you an overview of two major new features in the Advanced Render module for CINEMA 4D: a new Global Illumiation (GI) engine for realistic lighting that renders cleaner and quicker with minimal setup. And RenderMan support comes at last to CINEMA 4D with really tight integration including rendering directly in the Picture viewer using the external renderer. For more info see www.maxon.net.

Watch the HD version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDp5RTir4j0&fmt=18
In this video I will be showing you some basic shapes built into the program. I have made this video because I only showed the “donut” shape in the last one.
The movement of 3D objects is very smooth, the recording studio slowed down the rendering in this video. However, the movement should be more fluid than the last one.
O Shapes demonstrated
- Donut
I created a dough-like texture and Photoshop transformed it in 3D space. Downloadable version has sugar.
- Soda Can
One of my favourites, I created a Coca-Cola can that can be rotated in 3D space. Downloadable version has more accurate properties eg. glossiness
- 3D Postcard
Quite a powerful one that is great for perspective and advertisements. I rotated a 2D object in 3D space, sort of like a photograph. Downloadable version is the same.
- Sphere
A very good shape that I have used to create an orb like effect. There are many tutorials to create a good orb, I have applied their techniques with a twist. Downloadable version has better light locations.
I have used various pictures to demonstrate why these objects would be great for certain tasks.

This tutorial will show you how a simple gradient can leave a powerful impact on 2D shapes. After watching the video, you will see a consistent patter. The colors go from dark to light. This technique is also really popular with Apple’s website.
